Halloween and All
Saints' Day
in Poland
Short notes on these celebrations
"Halloween is not very popular in
Poland. In this day children mostly in North America and in some other
countries, dress funny or spooky costumes and knock on neighborhood doors saying
"Trick or Treat". Poland, being a predominantly Roman Catholic country, almost
doesn't celebrate Halloween. In 31'st October polish people prepare to the All
Saints' Day, they buy flowers, ever-burning fires and clean graves of them close
relatives. Halloween in Poland is often connected with special theatrical plays
and cinema projections." Tomasz B.
"Halloween - The history of Halloween
back to the ancient religion of the Celtes in Ireland. Traditional Halloween
symbols: pumpkin, bat, witch, black cat, candles, masks, arties and pranks,
ghoust. All Saints Day - celebrated in Poland when people go to the cemetery to
visit graves his dead family. And then they light ever-burning fire on the
groves their family. This day is free from job. Marcin R.
"In many countries Halloween is a big
festival but in Poland we have other traditions than rest. We don't have here
festival like halloween. We only have all Saints Day and It is good for me
because I realy do not like festival like halloween." Szymon M.
"In Poland we celebrate All Saints
Day. We go with our families to the church. After church everyone goes to the
cementary to light ever-burning fire on the graves of the dead members of our
family. After that we go to our houses and we eat common dinner." Bartosz W.
"Halloween is a tradition celebrated
on the night of October 31, most notably by children dressing in costumes and
going door-to-door collecting sweets, fruit, and other treats. Apart from this
trick-or-treating, there are many other traditional Halloween activities. Some
of these include costume parties, watching horror films, going to "haunted"
houses, and traditional autumn activities such as hayrides, some of these even "haunted".
A more complete coverage of Hallowen customs can be found at Halloween
traditions." Bartek D.
"My All Saints Day its very busy day.
I usually go to my family on south poland, I have there my grandfather's grave.
After dinner, all togather we are going on mass. After mass we go to the
cementary with proccesion to pray for our deceased family, and put some
cementery on their graves. This day is very cherful even though all people are
thinging about persons which aren't on this world any more. With all family we
have very nice day, we talk about evrything, it is simply reunion but i like
it." Grzegorz R.
